Confessions of a Farmville Addict

If you’re on Facebook, then chances are that you’ve encountered Farmville. You’ve probably been invited by friends to play the game, seen feeds by friends sharing their bushels, water, seedlings and other goodies from that highly addictive game where you as the virtual farmer plant crops for coins and XP points.

I started playing Farmville about two years ago and three months into the game I was taken into the dark side of online games. I spent hours decorating my farm, harvesting and searching feeds to claim gift rewards. I watched video tutorials on how to create 3-D effects on my farm and I stalked the Farmville Forum to check out pictures of other farms.

It all seemed like a harmless

pastime. It was free and fun. Well … that’s what I thought … until … I began to buy Farmville Cash so I could buy cute awesome buildings and animals for my farm. The first time I spent 20 dollars for 115 Farm cash I thought that I could have bought groceries with that money instead of buying sheep, pigs and chickens that I couldn’t eat.

I didn’t expect for Farmville to take over my social life, but it did. One night I was out with friends and I rushed home because I remembered that my crops were about to wither. I feigned stomach problems because no one wants you to stay when you’re ostensibly in pre-diarrhea mode.

I didn’t expect Farmville to take over my working life, but it did. While working I strategized in my head which crops I would plant next and which crops yielded the most XP points to help me get to the next level. Farmville also changed my shopping preference from Nordstrom to shopping for new outfits for my avatar. I didn’t tell anybody about my obsession with Farmville for fear that more sensible friends would tease me and call me a dork. But I was a dork in the closet. I couldn’t come out. And the worst part is that I couldn’t stop.

Then one day a friend saw my screen saver. Most people have pictures of their kids or their cats. I had neither but I had a picture of my farm with my Pattypans in full bloom. Are you one of those people she asked me. One of what I said. You know she said, those Farmville people. No I just do it once in a while I said. If I were attached to a lie detector those needles would have been going haywire. Then finally, I had to admit that I was a Farmville addict. I had all the symptoms of an addict. If you’ve ever had the misfortune of getting involved in Farmville, then take heed and ask yourself the following questions:

Would you rather watch your crops grow than watch life happen?

Would you rather visit your Farmville friends’ farms than visit your real life friends?

Do you prefer to tend and fertilize your crops than water your plants?

Have you broken your mouse from clicking too much due to plowing, planting and harvesting plots?

Do you ignore the hankerings of your bladder until you’ve sent back every gift request from your Farmville friends?

Do you friend strangers on Facebook just so you can have more Farmville neighbors?

Do you find yourself humming the Farmville theme during rush hour traffic?

Do you suffer anxiety attacks when the Farmville server goes down?

Are you constantly emailing Farmville support about how they can make the game better?

Have you considered starting your own Farmville blog about your farm?

As for me, I did quit cold turkey. Then I started again a few months ago, but the dazzle was gone. Farming suddenly felt like such a dull endeavor. I became entangled in a more aggressive endeavor. When I look back, farming is such a passive endeavor. Today I have a different obsession … so say hello to my little friend … Mafia Wars.

Do you play Farmville?

this is just hilarious, you mean you ditch your pals to tend to your “crops” you had added being a farmer in your resume for sure. Everyone got addictions at some point in life…I am not into gaming am into books love reading, the downside of this is I read even in bad light and it hurts my eyes but I can never help it 🙂

  2. veehcirra says:

you should try reading…can you imagine I love the smell of books that old and the new, its an experience you can’t get with a kindle!

  3. Zoe says:

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!
    Welcome Back. Missed ya!!!

  4. veehcirra says:

Ooh am glad we are both into books, I have never tried an audio book guess am still stuck in the scents and the smells 🙂

  5. veehcirra says:

I don’t have a specific favorite book, however one of the very first books I started reading for pleasure, I was young was -Witching hour- by Anne Rice it was more than 1k pages. I guess in every genre I have a favorite book. What about you?

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Oh yes! The first 500 pages went slow, but once I got into it I finished the rest in two days. My fav is “To Kill a Monckingbird” but I do like MIlan Kundera, Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller and Kurt Vonnegut. I do need to re-read those guys 🙂

  7. I must say, after spending yesterday afternoon wrestling with my garden and last night saying way too many “ouches” and “yikes” as I moved, virtual horticulture seems like a nice alternative.

But, you seem to have one foot firmly planted (pun intended) in real soil and one in cyber soil. What’s the harm? Maybe your eyes hurt and fingers get a little stiff at the end of the day? It’s better that waking up like I did this morning an wondering what tractor ran me over!

Very cute post…and yet another reason why I am afraid of Facebook!

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Yes, an older friend who doesn’t do computers recently got into FB through her Blackberry. This woman is now a FB fiend!

And … FB is dangerous in general for those damn games forget the crazy pic posts about half eaten food and other what nots that I don’t give a hoot about.

  8. hollyjb says:

I’ve had so many Farmville requests. And Mafia Wars too. I’ve never tried either of them. I got into a little pet game a few years back as well as a pirate one, but it was more ‘oh, I haven’t done that in a while, I should check out my animal’ than an obsession. My obsessions tend to be more literary. I read online all the time. Mostly fanfiction (first LOTR than Harry Potter, oh the shame) and honestly, some HP fanfic I’ve read is better than the original, no jokes! For me anyway. But seriously, I’ll spend hours reading online. Which is bad because if I don’t have a light on the comp. screen kills my eyes and I’m never in an actually computer chair so my butt gets really sore!

I did watch a YouTube vid on Farmville once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOtRMouZR5k It’s a Justin Bieber spoof and I’m not even sure how I first saw it. I think it was sent to me or something. It’s pretty funny and basically sums up your post!

  9. mysterycoach says:

ROFL! I was a yoville addict. Then they started telling me how to live my life on there and I quit LOL 🙂 I wasn’t allowed to upgrade, do things, buy certain things, etc., etc., … It was a nice distraction from life and all the things I had to do … until, the rules began applying there too which took away all my fun. Then there’s fishville, which I can’t get the dolphin, with his goofy smile off it’s face out of my tank because I clicked something the wrong way… and any time I visit there … he’s grinning at me with this stupid grin LOL 🙂 and we know whose boss… he’s not going anywhere, despite my best efforts to free willy into the ocean! *yes I know he’s a dolphin so not my point LOL 🙂

    • Lafemmeroar says:

You said it sister. The games do become similar to real life at one point. You can’t do crap without the “juice” of neighbors and coins and virtual cash. Now with Mafia Wars at least I can releave the inner Don in me 🙂

      • mysterycoach says:

LOL 🙂 there was an entire show on TV about people who live in virtual worlds which are becoming quite creative and visual these days. I mean, you can be anyone you want to be, anything… I mean time slipped from these people’s fingers like sand through an hour glass… it was very interesting. I could see it happening too.

        • Lafemmeroar says:

There are role playing sites too. I haven’t gotten into that type of social networking.

          • mysterycoach says:

What like I can be Elmer Fudd and you can be Bugs Bunny? 🙂 LOL … I’ve never heard of those actually. I think I’ll stick with blogging…

            • Lafemmeroar says:

lol are you gonna get that wabbit that is me? lmao!

              • mysterycoach says:

                Blam! you waskawey wabbit!

                • hollyjb says:

RPG’s are….interesting. I once spent a decent amount of time as a hobbit by the name of Mirabella Took and I had a friend (in real life and in the game) who was Tillie Twofoot. We mostly ‘played’ with this guy we had met through another friend, but who lived an hour away. It started to get weird with him and then real life stepped in with a vengeance (which was a good thing). It was kind of fun, I think, lol. I don’t really remember much.

  10. —Omg, I hear people are moving into these farms and leaving their fams & Kids.
They have found replacements on in Farmville. So sad. xx

  11. Can’t see you in overalls…..working the back ’40…..

  12. sayali611 says:

I have never played x-box, play stations or online games for precisely the same reasons you gave above. I know how addictive these games can be, so I just keep my distance.
I used to let my 6 yr old niece play farmville from my FB account. I didn’t even know what the game was. And a few days later I started getting messages from people to ‘give them seeds’ ‘water their plants’. It was weird. Very weird.

  13. April -Dawn says:

    Hi,
My name is April, and I am a Farmville Addict,,, lol
I also been playing over 2 years,, and yes,, have really went over the egde with it,, now I play maybe 2 times a week,, I have better things to do,,lol
Funny stuff,,, I enjoy reading your blogs at work everyday,, and people are wondering why is she laughing!! 🙂 Keep up the great work

    • Lafemmeroar says:

      Hi April,

I started FV again with my account, but I haven’t done much planting nor have I done any of the quests. I rarely play now, but I do love the trees. In my old farm I have 140 of those wedding trees. I too have curtailed my addiction, but you never know when the dark side of FV will suck me back in again. Here’s hoping I stay with my FV sobriety 🙂 And, thanks for reading and laughing … knowing this about you makes my Monday morning.

  14. I’ve had a few people “inviting” me to lay this game. I used to play another one but then I found Blogging and did’nt have the tme for it anymore. Probably more rewarding to Blog but I did enjoy it for a time

  15. Ruth D. says:

Wow, this is good! Love this post. I was a farmville addict once… And then I quit! Just like that! And then I even quit facebook! 😛
Yeah, but it’s OK… It’s good for me, I just wasted soooo much time on playing farmville and the whole facebook thing wasn’t right for me.

  16. Deborah the Closet Monster says:

I play neither game, but found reading it delightful to read about your play experiences. 😉

  17. Patti Kuche says:

Are you kidding me? This is such a revelation -when you say you paid $20 for Farm cash do you mean “real” or “virtual” money? Blogging, Twitter and FB are more enough for me and now you have reminded me how much I love To Kill a Mockingbird. Have fun with the Mafia!

    • Lafemmeroar says:

I paid real money for fake money. Now is that crazy or what?

      • Deborah the Closet Monster says:

I might or might not have done this for Bejeweled Blitz.

      • mysterycoach says:

No, not at all crazy. In order to have the nicer things you have to pay to have them. I was happy with what they had initially but when the other things started “costing” me… that’s when I was like, that ain’t right. Here I was playing, having a little escapism and POOF I can’t have things? I have to spend real money …? uh, no. 🙂

What I did use it for, believe it or not at one point was how to budget better. Instead of spending everything once I got it, I just racked up the coins to get bigger items.

  18. todaysworkingwoman says:

I used to be one too. It started when I got my hours cut at my old job. I needed something to do and it was a nice distraction while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I rarely play these days as I am too busy writing and to top it off, I had to develop a whole other Facebook page for my writing because many of my friends were just gamers. It’s more work to look at both pages, but sometimes, I get some interesting news on my FB gamer page as they don’t follow my on my writing FB page. Several of my friends tried to get me interested in Mafia Wars, but there’s no appeal for me. Good luck breaking the habit with that one!

  19. Aurora says:

My oh my. I thought I beat all with needing a 12 step group for Blogaholism, LOL. Well, LFR, you done did it again, you beat me to the punch. Should I assume there will be a new group appearing for recovering Farmville addicts? LOL I could be a support worker 🙂

  20. Really enjoyed Now I am thinking of joining the Samurai’s……… lolz

  21. frigginloon says:

    Try Smurfs 😦

  22. jsh0608 says:

I haven’t played FV in a bit…but I was super addicted to it. I play every once in a while. I’m more addicted to CafeWorld, Cityville, Frontier/Pioneer, and others. Now that I have started work, those aren’t as much lately, but I’m an addict. I’m like OMG my food is going to spoil and start counting how much more time I have. You know because if it was due in 4 hours, you have an extra 4 hours to get to it. My husband just looks at me like I’m weird. I tell him, umm, hello don’t look at me like that Mr. I cuss at the tv when I’m playing COD.

Hi my name is Janette. I’m addicted to Facebook games. Wait, this is to get help, I’m not ready for help right now. Peace out.

    :0)

  23. Patti Kuche says:

LFR, ok, so you spent $20 real bits on feeding the farm (I am hurting for you!) but think of it as an investment and the return you are getting from the Blog love. Mark Zucherberg, eat your heart out. You have friends. Priceless!

  24. Alfonso L says:

Great story, seems unbelievable but I remembered when I was 16 years old I got caught into an online game called runescape (kind of like World of Warcraft but free) along some friends and it absorbed our life for many months! Ever since I’ve stayed away from games that offer any kind of second life or virtual life.
Also since I have become more social and have developped my social skills more effectively, as one friend of mine says “real life is funnier” I barely play video games now just because they aren’t appealing to me anymore.
As always I loved your post, you made me laugh a couple of times 😉

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Hi Alfonso! There is something about these games that capture our addictive senses. I don’t know what it is … but for me my goal is to moderate. I loved FV, in fact I took a quick visit to my farm today and immediately clicked out! The plots were plowed just as I left them a while back. Nothing has changed, the animals needed tending to, but they’ll keep. Glad I made you laugh today 🙂

  25. supernaut says:

I deleted my facebook account a few weeks ago. And I can’t tell you the amount of stress that single act has reduced.

As far as games are concerned – well I used to play “Age of Kings TC” for like 14-16 hours at a stretch. But that was before I got married.

  26. Valerie says:

I just saw this on FB and thought it was real because the person who posted it really is moving to a farm-I have to admit I was jealous, until I read the punchline…

A dying granny tells her granddaughter, “I want to leave you my farm. That includes the villa, the tractor, and other equipment, the farmhouse, and $22,398,750 in cash.” The granddaughter, absolutely floored, says, “Oh Granny, you are SO generous! I didn’t even know you had a farm. Where is it?” With her last breath, Granny whispered, “Facebook…”

    • Lafemmeroar says:

lmao … as a FV expert I could have guessed it was virtual by the mere mention of the villa. I owned two of them 🙂 That granny must have been a busy farmer to accumulate 22 mil in farm coins. Thanks for visiting.

  27. I’ll admit that several years ago I got a little hooked on Farmville, but then I got busy or something for a week and just stopped playing it. Then I eventually took the big step and deleted my farm, even though I was level 80 or something crazy like that. Don’t worry, there’s hope for you yet!

  28. Katie says:

Ha! I love it! And I’ve been there…although my addiction was at a different degree, I still had it, and I still worried over my farm WAY too much. Glad you’ve moved on to bigger and better things (like Mafia Wars) 🙂

  29. Fox@n says:

love the post lol… i have a phone tap from z100 about a mom that is addicted to farmville i gotta post it. I never liked those types of games where it takes a long time to level up and what not especially if real money would do the trick. great post

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Thanks. Apparently there are lots of ladies into FV and I was one of them. I’m thinking that playing the game once in a while would be good, but for me it’s like eating chips and ice cream. I don’t know how to moderate … but I’m going to try.

  30. jsh0608 says:

Oooooor we can secrectly log on and do some FV….just one last hit…hehehe :0)

  31. I have to ask you Lafem, what is your day job like?

I’ll add this post to my favourites and send it to all friends who are Farmville abusers
    😀

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Consists of writing and strategizing definitely 🙂 I’m definitely a slave …
I thought I was an addict, but I never thought abuser. You’re probably on point though …

  32. kdaddy23 says:

I play Farmville, too, but Zynga has done so much to make me not like the game anymore and, yeah, I found myself getting very upset when my crops withered or being happy when I unlocked a new crop to plant, expanded my farm and all that other good stuff. These days, I settle for sending my Farmville neighbors gifts when they need them.

    • Lafemmeroar says:

I feel your words. Sending gifts back is a nice thing to do. Farmville is dangerous though … it can take up so much time decorating that damn virtual farm … and it really doesn’t mean anything, but I’m thinking of creating postcards of my farm screen shots 🙂

  33. kdaddy23 says:

Thank the good Lord I haven’t gotten that bad… but I did do a screen print of my farm in it’s earlier stages…

  34. hawleywood40 says:

Oh yes, FV got me too about two years ago. I was obsessed with gifting friends daily and planting and harvesting as many crops as I could and making my farm pretty. I got Lee into it too so I’d have one more FV friend, and since he wasn’t as into it as I was I tended his crops too lol! Another friend of mine was into it too. We were out at the pub one night and she called her sister to ask her to harvest her crops because we wanted to stay out til close and they were gonna wither. I loved it, and had so much fun. It was just sorta soothing somehow. But then I had my turning point of really wanting to focus on my writing. I was complaining about having no time to write but was spending at least an hour a day on an imaginary farm. So I bit the bullet and quit cold turkey too.

  35. An ad for a ‘facebook fon’ tht starts wid Farmville:

it is rather disconcerting if identify with what the guy is saying

  36. mm172001 says:

Love it! I even went to a Farmville/Zynga event 2 hours away to hope to get on a podcast. I’m not ready to quit though. The first step is admitting you have a problem right?

    • Lafemmeroar says:

Oh I once checked out Farmville Meetup Groups in my area. Then I thought what are we going to talk about? Farm decorating? Yay! I still wanted to go, but real life got in the way.
